The Papaya Prophecy

palmpapayadoghat

Maya's **hat** was, like, actually tragic. It had fuzzy pink ears because mom thought "tropical theme" meant literal costume party, and now she stood at the entrance of the sophomore spring fling looking like a low-effort anime character. The humidity in the gym was already making the fuzzy stuff cling to her forehead.

"I look cooked," she whispered to Chloe, who was, naturally, flawless in a sleek green dress that made Maya's sale-rack outfit feel even more devastating.

"You're fine," Chloe said, already scanning the crowd for Tyler. "Besides, you look cute. Different."

Different wasn't what Maya wanted. She wanted to disappear into the glossy-haired, perfectly-outfitted sea of classmates. She spotted Tyler across the gym—Tyler Chen, who had somehow become everything without even trying. He was leaning against the refreshment table, easy and effortless in just jeans and a button-up, while Maya stood there in her fuzzy-eared disaster.

Then she felt it. Her stomach betrayed her completely. The **papaya** smoothie she'd convinced herself was "exotic" and "sophisticated" for the occasion churned dangerously. She'd never even tried papaya before, but her wellness-obsessed aunt had sworn it was a superfood that would "clear her aura." Whatever that meant.

Disaster struck near the refreshment table. Jessica, laughing too hard at something Tyler said, knocked a full cup of the suspicious pink sludge directly onto Maya's chest. The fuzzy hat was fine. The white dress was absolutely ruined.

She bolted to the bathroom, nearly colliding with a tiny **dog** someone had somehow snuck in. "What is even happening?" she hissed at the bewildered-looking Chihuahua, which just blinked at her with tiny, judgmental eyes before someone scooped it up and rushed away.

When she emerged 20 minutes later, most of the stain scrubbed out but the dress now slightly damp and see-through in spots, she found herself sitting on the bleachers alone, watching couples sway to some slow song. She'd missed her moment with Tyler. She looked ridiculous. The night was fully cooked.

Then someone sat beside her.

"Your **palm** says you're going to be okay," Tyler said softly, taking her hand.

"What?"

"My grandma reads palms," he said, tracing the lines on her hand with gentle fingers. "She says this line means you're stronger than you think. And this one? That's your adventure line."

Maya felt her face burning, but not from embarrassment this time. "I literally just spilled papaya all over myself in front of everyone," she mumbled. "I feel like such a flop."

Tyler smiled, and it was genuine. "The dog was cute though. Pretty sure that chihuahua was more popular than half the football team tonight." He paused. "And honestly? The hat's kinda iconic."

Maya actually laughed. The fuzzy hat was still dumb. The papaya incident would live in infamy. But sitting there, holding Tyler's hand while he made up fortunes about her future, Maya thought maybe the night wasn't a total flop after all. She could work with this.
