The Papaya Promise
I froze at the edge of the pool, heart pounding like a bass drop. My cousin Yara had dragged me to Tyler's end-of-summer bash, and suddenly I felt exposed. The scent of grilled papaya drifted from the cabana, making my stomach twist.
Yara wasn't having it. "You've been creeping on Tyler's Instagram all summer. Now you're gonna ghost? That's not the vibe, cuz."
I had been spying on his posts. Every beach pic, every story. But the real Tyler? This was different.
Meanwhile, my brother Kofi sat in the corner like a grumpy bear, still salty about being dragged along. "This is weak," he grumbled.
Then my phone started buzzing. My friends had found a cat. A tiny, matted stray behind the 7-Eleven. They were blowing up my phone: "YOU HAVE TO SEE HER."
Suddenly I wasn't the outsider anymore. I was the girl who rescued cats. That was my thing. It made me feel real.
I waded into the water, the cool embrace settling my nerves. Tyler glanced my way and smiled. Not because I was cool. Just because I was there. That was enough.
Papaya in the fruit salad, water in the pool, spying on social media, the cat, my bear of a brother—all these pieces came together in one summer moment. I felt alive, I felt seen, I felt ready for whatever came next.
