The Papaya Promise

The papaya sat untouched on her plate, its orange flesh glistening in the harsh morning light of the terrace. Elena stared at it, remembering how Marcos had always picked out the seeds for her, his fingers stained with juice, smiling like he'd performed magic rather than basic fruit surgery.

That was three months ago. Now she was alone at this resort in Marbella, their planned anniversary trip becoming her impromptu escape. The couple at the next table laughed over coffee, and she hated them a little.

She'd tried swimming yesterday, laps at dawn when the pool was still. The water had been cold and unforgiving, her body slicing through silence that felt too much like the life waiting back home. She'd stopped after twenty minutes, sitting on the edge as the sun rose, telling herself it was the vitamin D deficiency her doctor had mentioned, not the crushing weight of forty-five years and a marriage that had simply... evaporated.

"You look like you need this."

The man extended a water bottle, his smile genuine. He was maybe fifty, silver hair, easy in his skin in a way she'd forgotten how to be.

"Vitamin water," he added. "My daughter insists. Apparently, I'm terrible at hydrating."

Elena found herself smiling back. "I'm Elena."

"David. You playing padel this afternoon? The club's looking for mixed doubles."

She should say no. She should finish her coffee and her symbolic papaya and go back to their room and cry properly, the way she'd been avoiding for weeks.

"I haven't played in years."

"Neither has my partner. We're terrible. It's mostly an excuse to drink afterwards."

The papaya didn't taste as bitter as she expected. Later, David's terrible forehand would make her laugh for the first time in months. Later still, over gin and tonics, she'd find herself admitting she wasn't sure she was going back.

But that was later. Now, she took the water bottle, their fingers brushing, and something in her chest finally, finally, began to loosen.
