The Papaya Promise

The papaya sat on the kitchen counter, untouched since breakfast. Its skin was mottled with yellow and green, like a bruise that wouldn't heal. Elena stared at it while waiting for the cable guy to show up.

"They said between eight and twelve," David had said that morning, before leaving for the office. "Just let them in. I need the internet working by tonight."

It was now eleven-forty. Elena's phone buzzed—Marc. Again.

She stepped out onto the balcony. Below, the apartment complex's pool shimmered in the midday heat, empty except for a single floating leaf. Three nights ago, she and Marc had been in that pool, clothes abandoned on the lounge chair, his hands on her waist, his laughter against her neck. The chlorine still lingered in her memory, sharp and chemical.

Her palm rested on the balcony railing. She could almost feel the ghost of Marc's touch there—he'd grabbed her hand last night when they'd said goodbye behind the bodega, his grip desperate, his eyes pleading with her to leave David.

"You know I can't," she'd whispered.

The doorbell rang.

Elena opened the door to find a young guy in a utility polo, cable modem in hand. "Ma'am, I'm here about the—"

"Come in." She led him to the living room, watching him work, his movements efficient and practiced. She thought about Marc's hands—rough, clumsy, honest. David's hands were smooth, calculated, never quite there when she needed them.

The papaya still sat on the counter when the technician finished. "All set, ma'am. You're connected now."

She paid him and locked the door behind her. The router's lights blinked steadily—green, green, green. Everything was working. Everything was as it should be.

Elena picked up the papaya. Its skin gave slightly under her fingers. She cut it open, revealing the vibrant orange flesh inside, speckled with black seeds. Beautiful. Temporary. Like everything else.

She took a bite, sweet and cloying on her tongue, and thought about how some things rot before you've even finished enjoying them.
