The Papaya Promise
My stupid **hat** kept sliding over my eyes. Definitely not the vibe I wanted for my first hangout with Jordan. I'd spent twenty minutes perfecting my hair, only to hide it under this beat-up **baseball** cap from last year's championship game that my dad made me wear.
We were sitting on her front porch, sharing this weird moment. Her house smelled like **papaya** — her mom was obsessed with tropical fruits and had smoothies fermenting on every counter. Jordan held up an **orange**, tossing it between her hands like she was nervous too.
"You ever wonder why we pretend to like things?" she asked, finally peeling the orange. "Like, I hate baseball. But here you are with that hat."
I laughed, pushing the brim up. "Okay, you caught me. My dad thinks I'm this sports guy. I'm more into... I don't know, stuff that doesn't involve chasing balls."
Jordan's eyes lit up. "Same! Last week, I told my friends I love watching **cable** news because I didn't want them to think I'm basic. But honestly? I've never even watched cable. We cut the cord three years ago."
She handed me a slice of orange. Her fingers brushed mine, and my brain did that thing where it forgot how to human.
"My mom's making papaya smoothies inside," she said, voice lower. "Want to come inside and be basic together?"
"Only if you promise to never tell anyone I wore this hat."
"Deal. But you have to try the papaya."
"Gross."
"Exactly."
We went inside, leaving the hat on the porch rail. Two frauds, about to drink weird smoothies, finally real. Sometimes the coolest moments are the ones you never planned.
