The Papaya Promise

Marcus stood at the edge of the pool, clutching his phone like it was a life raft. The annual summer bash at Jenna's house was already in full swing—literally. People were cannonballing off the diving board while That's So Raven played from someone's portable speaker. He'd been crushing on Jenna since seventh period English, but his social anxiety had other plans.

"Yo Marcus! You gonna stand there all day or actually get wet?" Tyler called out, already halfway through his third lap of swimming laps like he was training for the Olympics. Tyler, who played varsity baseball and had abs that looked like they were chiseled from marble. Tyler, who Jenna was currently laughing with by the snack table.

Marcus adjusted his oversized t-shirt. "I'm good, just chillin'."

But then Jenna appeared beside him, dripping wet but somehow still looking flawless. Her orange bikini top somehow matched the sunset perfectly behind her. "Hey, you want some fruit? My mom went overboard at the farmers market again."

She held out a slice of something bright and unfamiliar. "It's papaya. Ever tried it?"

Marcus shook his head. "Nah, never had it."

"Well, first time for everything, right?" She popped a piece into her own mouth. "It's literally life-changing. Like, existential crisis level good."

He took a slice. The flavor exploded—sweet but tangy, weirdly tropical but somehow familiar. Like how he felt about Jenna herself. Intimidating but impossible to resist.

"So," she said, wiping juice from her chin, "I heard you're trying out for the baseball team next season. That's huge, Marcus."

He nearly choked on his papaya. "Who told you that?"

"Tyler mentioned it. Said you've got a killer arm." She grinned. "I think it's cool. You taking risks. Stepping out of your comfort zone."

Marcus looked at the pool, at Tyler swimming laps like he owned the water, at everyone having the kind of summer experience that felt miles away from his usual solitary existence.

"You know what?" Marcus said, pulling off his shirt before he could overthink it. "First time for everything."

He cannonballed into the deep end, creating a splash that soaked Jenna and half the party. As he surfaced, gasping and laughing, she high-fived him.

"Welcome to the deep end, Marcus. About time."
