The Papaya Promise
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house in Florida. The backyard held her favorite place in the world—a crystal-blue swimming pool surrounded by swaying palm trees. But Grandmother had a secret about the biggest palm tree, the one with the curved trunk that looked like it was dancing.
"Every full moon," Grandmother whispered, "that palm tree drops something magical."
Lily waited and watched. On the night of the brightest full moon, she crept outside in her pajamas. The huge palm tree shimmered in the moonlight. Suddenly, something fell from its branches—splash! Into the pool it went.
Lily peered into the water. There, floating gently, was the most beautiful papaya she had ever seen. It glowed softly, like a tiny moon that had fallen from the sky.
As she reached for it, the papaya spoke. "I am a wish papaya," it said in a voice like wind through leaves. "Whoever shares me with a friend shall have their wish come true. But eat me alone, and the wish turns to stone."
Lily thought of her best friend Mateo, who had moved away and missed Florida's sunshine. She knew what she had to do.
The next morning, she called Mateo. "Come over quick! Bring your swimsuit!"
When Mateo arrived, his face lit up. The two old friends splashed in the pool, laughing like no time had passed. Then Lily brought out the papaya, which still glowed faintly.
Together, they shared the sweet, magical fruit. It tasted like sunshine and friendship and dreams.
"What did you wish for?" Mateo asked.
"That you could visit whenever you want," Lily said.
"I wished the same thing!" Mateo laughed.
Suddenly, the pool began to shimmer. In its reflection, they saw something wonderful—a beautiful papaya tree growing in Mateo's new backyard, with a tiny pool beneath it just like Grandmother's.
"Now," said Grandmother, appearing with a smile, "you two will always have a place to be together, no matter how far apart you live. The pool and palm and papaya will keep your friendship alive."
And every summer, Lily and Mateo met at one of their magical pools, sharing papayas and wishes, their friendship growing stronger with every splash.
