The Papaya Promise

Lila loved visiting her grandmother's garden in Puerto Rico. The air smelled like sweet blossoms and warm earth. Every morning, she helped tend the papaya tree behind the little blue house.

One day, something strange happened. As Lila reached for a ripe papaya, she heard a soft groan. She peeked around the tree trunk and gasped.

A little zombie stood there! But this wasn't a scary zombie like in stories. Its green skin sparkled like emeralds, and its eyes shone with kindness. It held a wilted flower with both hands, looking sad.

"Are you lost?" Lila asked bravely.

The zombie nodded slowly. It pointed to the flower, which needed water.

Lila smiled. "I'm Lila. Let's be friends!"

Suddenly, a magnificent bull emerged from the tall grass. His coat was golden brown, and his horns were polished smooth. He lowered his head gently, and Lila realized he was protecting the little zombie.

"This is Fernando," the zombie seemed to say with gestures. "He saved me from the storm."

Lila understood. The zombie had been wandering alone when Fernando found him and brought him here for shelter. Now they were the best of friends.

Lila had an idea. She picked the sweetest papaya from the tree and cut it into three pieces. The bull ate his piece happily. The zombie tried papaya for the first time and danced with joy!

"Every afternoon," Lila promised, "we'll share papayas together."

And so they did. The little zombie who had been lonely found friendship. The brave bull who had once roamed alone found companions. And Lila learned that sometimes the most unlikely creatures become the best friends of all.

True friendship, she discovered, comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors — even emerald green.
