The Papaya Pool's Secret
Lily loved running through the meadow behind her house, her curly hair bouncing like golden springs in the sunshine. One especially hot afternoon, she discovered something she had never seen before — a shimmering blue pool hidden among the ancient oak trees.
The water sparkled like diamonds, and Lily was just about to dip her toes in when she heard a rustling sound. Out from the bushes stepped a large brown bear with kind, twinkling eyes. Lily wanted to run away, but something about the bear's gentle smile made her stay.
"Welcome, little friend," the bear said in a rumbly but warm voice. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find my magical pool."
Lily's eyes went wide. "Your pool?"
The bear nodded and reached behind a rock to pull out the strangest thing Lily had ever seen — a bright orange papaya. "This pool grants one special wish each summer, but only to those who share something precious first."
He sliced the papaya and offered half to Lily. It was sweet and juicy, like sunshine melted into fruit. Lily thought about what she could share. Then she remembered — her grandmother had taught her a special song about friendship.
Lily sang the song, her voice growing stronger with each note. The pool began to glow, and sparkles floated up like tiny stars. "What's your wish, Lily?" the bear asked.
"I wish for forever-friendships," she said without thinking. "For everyone to have a friend as wonderful as you've been to me."
The bear's eyes twinkled brighter than ever. "That," he said, "is the perfect wish."
Lily skipped home that evening, her heart full of magic. And from that day on, whenever she visited the pool, the bear was there, ready to share papayas and remind her that the best wishes are the ones we make for others.
