The Papaya Pool's Secret
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house in Florida. The backyard was always full of surprises, but today she discovered something magical.
Behind the old mango tree, hidden beneath curtains of hanging vines, lay a small sparkling pool she had never noticed before. The water shimmered like liquid diamonds, and something about it made her skin tingle with magic.
"Hello, young one," purred a soft voice.
Lily jumped. Sitting on a mossy rock was the most unusual creature she had ever seen—a cat with the face of a wise old being and golden wings folded neatly at her sides. A sphinx!
"I'm Princess Jasmine," the sphinx said. "Guardian of the Wishing Pool. And you must be Lily."
Lily's eyes widened. "You know my name?"
"I know many things." Princess Jasmine nodded toward the water. "But these little friends know something special."
Three goldfish were swimming in the pool, but they weren't swimming normally. They were swimming through the AIR above the water, leaving trails of sparkles like tiny shooting stars.
"They're magic goldfish," Lily whispered.
"Very observant." The sphinx smiled. "Once each month, under the full moon, they grant one wish to someone who proves their heart is true. But you must pass a test first."
Lily's heart raced. "What kind of test?"
The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "A test of kindness. Look at that papaya tree behind you. It has only one ripe fruit, but it hangs high, out of reach. If you can share that papaya with someone who needs it more than you, your wish will be granted."
Lily thought hard. She could wish for anything—a new bike, a puppy, endless ice cream. But the sphinx wanted her to share first.
Then she remembered Mrs. Rivera next door, whose hands were too shaky to climb trees anymore. Lily hurried next door and helped Mrs. Rivera pick the papaya together. They split it perfectly, and Mrs. Rivera's eyes filled with happy tears as she tasted the sweet, orange fruit.
When Lily returned to the pool, the goldfish were still swimming through the air, their scales glowing softly.
"You passed," Princess Jasmine purred proudly. "What is your wish?"
Lily smiled. "I don't need a wish anymore. Making Mrs. Rivera happy was the best gift."
The goldfish swam around her in a rainbow arc, blessing her with sparkles that smelled like papaya and sunshine. Princess Jasmine nodded wisely.
"And that, dear Lily, is why the magic chose you. The best wishes are the ones we make come true ourselves."
From that day on, Lily visited the pool often. She and Princess Jasmine became best friends, and sometimes, when no one was watching, the goldfish would still be swimming through the air, reminding her that kindness is the greatest magic of all.
