The Papaya Pool Party Incident
I was literally spiraling. Standing at the edge of Madison's backyard pool, clutching my towel like a lifeline, watching everyone else act like they'd been born in swimsuits. The water shimmered with that perfect Instagram-filter blue, and I was seriously considering claiming I forgot my swimsuit and just... leaving.
"You coming in or what?"
Jake. The Jake. The one I'd been lowkey obsessed with since seventh period English since September. He was treading **water** in the deep end, hair wet and perfect, acting like this was just another Saturday.
"Yeah!" I called back, voice cracking slightly. "Just warming up!"
My brain was screaming at me. You can't just stand there forever, Maya. But the thing was, my swimsuit was from Target, not one of those cute bikini sets everyone else was wearing, and my hair was definitely not going to look good wet, and—and I was overthinking everything, per usual.
Then Madison's mom came out with this fancy fruit platter situation, like full-on Pinterest mom energy. "Anyone want some fresh papaya?" she called out. "It's organic!"
I internally panicked. Who even eats papaya at a pool party? This wasn't a spa day, this was high school social warfare. But then Jake swam over and grabbed a piece, acting like it was totally normal.
"Dude, this **papaya** is actually fire," he said, locking eyes with me. "You gotta try it."
And just like that, my dignity was on the line. I couldn't not try it after that.
So I grabbed a piece. And you know what? It wasn't terrible. It was actually kind of... refreshing? Sweet but not too sweet, like the kind of sophisticated flavor that said, I'm trying new things, I'm evolving.
"See?" Jake grinned. "Told you."
Something shifted. I stopped thinking about my Target swimsuit and my hair and whatever else I'd been spiraling about. I just... jumped in. The shock of the cold water was perfect, washing away all that overthinking.
Later, when everyone was doing those stupid pool races and someone yelled "STOP **running** BY THE POOL!" like a thousand times, Jake and I ended up floating in the shallow end, talking about nothing and everything.
"You're different than I thought," he said.
"Different how?"
He shrugged. "Just... cooler."
Maybe the papaya was a sign. Or maybe I was finally done **running** from every awkward moment. Either way, I wasn't that girl standing on the edge anymore.
