The Papaya Pool Party
Lily loved the old swimming pool behind her grandmother's house. It wasn't like the fancy pools in town—this one was magical. The water always felt warm, like sunshine, and sometimes it sparkled with tiny rainbow bubbles.
One hot afternoon, Lily was swimming lazy circles when she heard a splash. A small green creature peeked from behind a floating papaya that had fallen from the tree overhead.
"Hello!" the creature said. Lily almost jumped out of the water. The creature looked like a tiny zombie, with patchy green skin and mismatched buttons for eyes, but it smiled the friendliest smile she'd ever seen.
"I'm Zimble," it said. "I'm the pool's guardian zombie. But don't worry—I only eat papayas!"
Zimble explained that long ago, the pool's magic had brought him to life. His job was to keep the water happy and safe for everyone who swam there. In return, the papaya tree dropped fruit for him to eat.
"But I'm lonely," Zimble said sadly. "Most children run away when they see me."
Lily smiled. "They're just scared because they don't know you. Want to race?"
They spent the rest of the afternoon swimming races and playing games. Zimble showed her secret underwater caves filled with glowing shells, and Lily taught him how to do cannonball splashes.
By dinner time, other children had come to swim. At first, they were afraid of Zimble, but Lily explained he was friendly. Soon, everyone was laughing and swimming together.
That evening, as Lily dried off, she learned something wonderful: sometimes the things that seem scary at first are just friends we haven't met yet. And the best magic happens when we're brave enough to see the good in others.
Now every summer, children come from all over to swim in the magical pool with Zimble, the friendliest zombie in the world, and share papaya feasts under the stars.
