The Papaya Pool Party

Lily loved summer, especially Saturday mornings at the community pool. Today was extra special because her grandma had given her a ripe papaya from her garden. "This is a magic fruit," Grandma whispered. "Eat it before you go swimming, and you'll see wonderful things."

Lily sat on the pool edge, savoring the sweet orange papaya. The juice dripped down her chin as she finished every bite. Then she grabbed her baseball — she always brought it for poolside catch with her dad — and hopped into the cool blue water.

Suddenly, the water sparkled like diamonds. Lily blinked. Had that always happened? She ducked underwater and gasped. There, swimming gracefully at the bottom of the pool, was the strangest creature she'd ever seen. It looked like a person but had green skin and seaweed hair. A zombie!

Lily started to panic, but then she remembered the papaya. Magic. This wasn't scary — it was special.

The zombie swam up, breaking the surface with a splash. "Hello!" it said in a bubbly voice. "I'm Zola! I've been waiting for someone like you."

"A zombie... in the pool?" Lily asked, amazed.

"I'm a pool zombie," Zola explained. "I guard this special pool and make sure everyone is safe while swimming. But I get so lonely down here."

Lily's heart melted. She looked around the empty pool. "I have a baseball," she offered. "Want to play catch?"

Zola's face lit up. "I've never played baseball before!"

They played for hours — Zola learned to toss the ball, and Lily learned to hold her breath longer than ever before. When it was time to leave, Zola gave Lily a wet, seaweed hug.

"Come back anytime," Zola said. "And remember — even the most unusual friends can be the best friends of all."

That night, Lily fell asleep dreaming of papaya magic and baseball games with zombies. Some adventures, she learned, are hidden in the most unexpected places.
