The Papaya Pool of Wishes
Lila knelt in her grandmother's garden, her eyes wide. The papaya on the tree was glowing. Soft golden light pulsed from its orange skin like a tiny heartbeat.
"Buster!" she called. Her spotted dog came running, his ears flapping in the warm breeze. As Buster reached her, he nosed the glowing papaya—and spoke!
"Lila, I've waited twelve years for this papaya to ripen!" Buster's voice sounded like crunching autumn leaves.
Lila gasped. "You can TALK?"
"Only when the Moon Papaya glows," Buster explained. "Legend says it leads to the Wishing Pool. Come!" He began running toward the forest edge, his tail waving like a flag.
Lila chased after him, her bare feet tapping against dewy grass. Through the woods they ran, past fireflies that winked like tiny stars. Buster's spots shimmered in the papaya's glow as they dodged trees and hopped over crystal streams.
"Here!" Buster stopped at the edge of a hidden pool. Its water reflected a sky full of stars, even though it was daytime. Floating in the center was a lily pad shaped exactly like a papaya.
"Make a wish," whispered Buster.
Lila thought hard. She could wish for anything—flying, endless candy, magic powers. But she looked at Buster, who had waited twelve years to find this place. She looked at the glowing papaya she still held.
"I wish," Lila said, "that everyone could find what makes them happiest—and that it would be as wonderful as finding this pool with my best friend."
The pool's water turned rainbow colors. The papaya's light spread through it, and suddenly Lila understood. The magic wasn't in the wishing. It was in the journey—the running together, the wonder of discovery, the friendship that made every moment brighter.
Buster licked her cheek. "That was the perfect wish."
As they walked home, the papaya stopped glowing. But Lila didn't mind. Some treasures, she realized, shine brightest in your heart.
