The Papaya Pool Incident

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her papaya smoothie like it was a lifeline. The annual summer pool party at Jake's house was basically social suicide if you messed it up, and Maya had already messed up plenty of times before.

"You coming in or what?" called Keisha, already swimming laps with the effortless grace of someone who'd never had a nervous day in her life. Maya's crush, Jordan, was lounging on a floatie, looking like something straight out of a Netflix teen drama.

Maya's brain went into full panic mode. She'd been running from pool parties since seventh grade, when someone's dad joked about her "interesting" one-piece. Now she was fifteen, and somehow the anxiety hadn't gotten the memo that she was supposed to be over it.

Then it happened. Jordan's younger brother, that absolute bull of a sixth grader who lived to embarrass people, came tearing through the backyard with his friends. They were playing some chaotic version of tag that involved yelling "BULL IN THE CHINA SHOP" at maximum volume.

One misstep. That's all it took. The bull—otherwise known as Tyler—crashed into Maya, and her papaya smoothie went airborne. It splashed perfectly into the pool, right beside Jordan's floatie.

Everyone froze. Maya's face burned hotter than the July sun. This was it. Her social life was officially over. She'd be known as Papaya Girl for the next four years.

Jordan sat up, dripping pink smoothie. He looked at Maya, then at the floating papaya chunks, and started laughing. Not mean laughing—like, actually cracking up.

"Dude," he said to Tyler, "you just initiated the smoothie version of the Hunger Games."

Keisha swam over, fished out a piece of papaya with her hand, and popped it into her mouth. "Actually? Not bad. 10/10 would recommend."

Maya stood there, stunned, as something inside her shifted. The tightness in her chest loosened. Nobody was laughing at her. They were just... hanging out.

"Well," Maya said, finding her voice, "if nobody else is gonna finish this smoothie..." She kicked off her flip-flops and cannonballed into the pool, creating a splash that soaked Tyler.

"BULL'S EYE!" he yelled, grinning.

As Maya resurfaced, sputtering and laughing, she realized something important: sometimes you had to let your papaya smoothie fly to find out who'd swim with you anyway.
