The Papaya Pond Promise

Lila's hair was always a wild tangle of curls that bounced when she ran, which she did often. Every afternoon after school, she'd race to the old papaya tree behind her house, where she'd made the most unlikely friend in the world.

A tiny goldfish named Finbar lived in a hollow of the tree, protected from cats and birds by the curved yellow-orange walls of an old papaya that had somehow grown around him. How he got there, nobody knew. But Finbar was no ordinary fish – he could speak, he could breathe air for hours, and he knew secrets about the forest that nobody else did.

"Your hair looks like sunshine today," Finbar would say, his voice like tiny bubbles popping. Lila would giggle and offer him pieces of her papaya lunch, which he'd nibble with surprising appetite for a fish.

One afternoon, Lila came crying. Someone at school had made fun of her wild hair. Finbar listened carefully, then did something extraordinary. He sprinkled glowing water from his special pond onto her curls.

"Your hair is perfect," he said. "It catches the wind like nets catch dreams."

Lila's hair shimmered with orange light in the setting sun, and she understood – her curls were magic because they were hers. She and Finbar made a pinky promise (well, fin promise) that they'd always believe in each other.

From that day on, Lila walked taller. And if anyone asked about her unusual friend, she'd just smile mysteriously and say, "Some friendships are too wonderful to explain."
