The Papaya Party

The papaya sat on the kitchen counter like an alien artifact, its spotted orange skin glowing under the party lights. Maya stood next to it, tugging at her dress — the one her mom said made her look like a sunset, but what actually made her look like a traffic cone. Bright orange. At a party where everyone else wore black.

She didn't even know whose house this was. Jen had dragged her here, saying, "Trust me, it'll be chill," then immediately abandoned her by the snack table to flirt with some senior near the keg.

"You gonna eat that, or just stare at it like it's gonna bite?"

Maya jumped. A guy leaned against the counter, dark hair falling over his eyes, wearing that effortlessly-cool flannel over a band T-shirt. Fox. Everyone knew Fox — he was the kind of guy who floated between friend groups, never quite fitting in anywhere but welcome everywhere.

"I've never had one," Maya admitted. "Is it, like, an acquired taste?"

Fox shrugged, cutting it open with a knife he'd definitely just stolen from someone's kitchen drawer. "First time for everything, right?" He handed her a wedge. "Try it. If it sucks, I'll give you my drink."

She took a bite. Sweet, musky, strange. Not terrible, but definitely not something she'd choose again.

"See? Not so bad." Fox grinned. "You're Jen's friend, right? Saw you guys come in."

"You know Jen?"

"Everyone knows Jen." Fox stepped back as someone's enormous bulldog — literally named Bull — came charging through the kitchen, barking at nothing. "Hey! Bull! Chill!" He nudged the dog aside with his foot. "Sorry, he's... a lot."

The scene was chaos: people spilling drinks, music thumping from the living room, and now this dog trying to hump someone's leg. Maya should've felt overwhelmed. Instead, she felt... awake? Like this was exactly where she was supposed to be, traffic-cone dress and all.

Then she spotted it: a calico cat perched on top of the refrigerator, watching the destruction with judgment in its yellow eyes. The cat met Maya's gaze and slow-blinked.

"That's Churro," Fox said, following her eyes. "She's the only one here who actually has her life together."

Maya laughed — really laughed, head tilted back, not caring that her hair was probably frizzy and her dress was too bright and she was eating weird fruit with a guy she barely knew. For the first time all night, she wasn't worrying about fitting in.

"Hey," Fox said, "wanna get out of here? There's this spot down the street with actually good food. And no papaya."

Maya considered — Jen was still somewhere with the senior, the party was getting weirder by the minute, and Fox was looking at her like she was someone worth knowing.

"Yes," she said. "Absolutely."
