The Papaya Padel Incident

Maya's hair had been a disaster since she'd attempted the DIY balayage tutorial she found on TikTok at 2 AM. Now it looked like a highlighter had exploded on her head, which was exactly why she needed the fresh start that starting at Ridgeview High demanded.

That's how she ended up at the neighborhood padel courts, clutching a borrowed racket like it was a lifeline. Padel was everywhere in her new town—apparently if you didn't play, you didn't exist.

"You swing like my grandma," said Bull, the massive senior who'd claimed the court. Maya flinched. Everyone said Bull Torres lived up to his name, but he was just… standing there, eating a papaya.

"First time," Maya mumbled, adjusting her messy ponytail.

Then Chaos happened. Literally. Chaos was her family's golden retriever, who'd somehow escaped the house and was now sprinting toward the courts, ears flopping like insane wings.

"Chaos! NO!" Maya yelled, but it was too late. The dog launched herself at Bull, who dropped his papaya. The exotic fruit splattered everywhere like something from a comedy sketch.

Dead silence on the courts.

Maya's hair fell out of its ponytail. She wanted to evaporate.

But Bull just started laughing. Not mean laughter—actual, genuine laugh-till-you-cry laughter. "Your dog's a menace." He knelt to pet Chaos, who was now happily covered in papaya slime.

"I can buy you another papaya," Maya offered weakly.

"Nah." Bull wiped his hands on his shorts. "But you can be my padel partner. Miranda's out with mono, and we've got regionals next week."

Maya blinked. "What?"

"You've got instincts. And clearly you can handle chaos." Bull grinned. "Plus, that hair? It's giving main character energy."

Her neon-dyed disaster hair. Main character energy.

"Okay," Maya heard herself say. "But I'm bringing treats. Papaya-free zone."

"Deal."

Sometimes the worst moments become the best stories. And sometimes, you find your people in the messiest ways possible—literally.
