The Papaya Pact

catpapayabearpadelfriend

Maya stood at the edge of the padel court, her borrowed racquet feeling like a foreign object in her sweating palms. The new girl at school, she'd somehow gotten invited to Jordan's weekend tournament, and now she was about to humiliate herself in front of the cool kids.

"You got this, Maya!" Jordan called from across the court, flashing that smile that made everyone feel like they'd been his best friend since kindergarten.

Her stomach did backflips. She wasn't ready for this.

Earlier that morning, she'd almost bailed. Sitting on her bed with Mr. Grizzly—her ancient stuffed bear from third grade—she'd practiced her excuse. "Sorry, family thing." But something had made her grab her sneakers and go.

Now here she was, about to serve. Her opponent, this intense sophomore named Sasha, looked ready to destroy her.

The first serve hit the net. Maya's face burned.

"Try again!" someone shouted.

Then her phone buzzed in her pocket. Probably her mom checking in, or maybe—

"CAT?!" Jordan suddenly yelled. Everyone turned.

A chunky orange cat had somehow slipped onto the court and was now sitting regally near the baseline, licking its paw like it owned the place.

"That's Mango!" Sasha burst out laughing. "How did you get in here?"

The cat disruption broke everything. Suddenly everyone was laughing, the tension evaporating like morning fog. Even Maya relaxed.

After the match (which she lost, but not as badly as she'd feared), they all grabbed smoothies. Jordan handed Maya something bright orange.

"Papaya. Try it."

Maya hesitated, then took a bite. Weird but good—sort of like if a melon and a mango had a baby.

"So," Jordan said, "you joining us next weekend?"

Maya looked around at them—Sasha petting her cat through the fence, Jordan offering her fruit, the others actually waiting for her answer. Something shifted inside her.

"Yeah," she said, smiling for real this time. "I think I will."

That night, Maya told Mr. Grizzly all about it. Sometimes, she thought, the scariest things ended up being exactly what you needed.
