The Papaya Moon's Friendly Zombie
Lila loved climbing the ancient palm tree behind her grandmother's house. Its rough bark felt like an old friend's hand, and its fronds danced in the warm island breeze like green skirts twirling in the wind. Every evening, Lila would scramble up to watch the sunset paint the sky orange and pink.
One magical twilight, as Lila reached for the perfect branch, she noticed something strange. Below the palm tree's gnarled roots, a small figure shuffled through the garden. It looked like a zombie from her storybooks—wobbly, grayish, with tangled hair—but instead of being scary, this creature was carefully picking up fallen papayas that had dropped from grandmother's tree.
The zombie noticed Lila watching and froze. Its big, gentle eyes looked worried, like it expected her to scream. Instead, Lila climbed down softly and whispered, "Are you hungry?"
The zombie nodded slowly and pointed to the papayas in its arms.
"Those are my grandmother's papayas," Lila said kindly. "But she shares with everyone. Would you like one?"
The zombie's face lit up—it almost smiled! Lila realized this wasn't a scary monster at all. It was just someone lonely who loved sweet fruit.
"I'm Lila," she said, sitting cross-legged in the grass. "What's your name?"
The zombie thought for a moment, then made a sound like "Zom-bae."
"Nice to meet you, Zombae!" Lila giggled. Together, they shared papayas under the palm tree while fireflies began to twinkle around them like tiny floating stars. Zombae told Lila—through gestures and happy sounds—that he was a magical guardian who took care of the garden at night.
From then on, every evening when the sun began to set, Lila would climb her palm tree and wait for her friend. And Zombae would always appear, ready for another papaya feast and another evening of friendship under the twinkling sky.
Lila learned that sometimes the things that seem scary at first are just waiting to become your best friends—if you're brave enough to say hello.
