The Papaya Moon Pool
Luna couldn't sleep. The full moon painted her bedroom silver, and something magical was pulling her toward the garden. Her ginger cat, Pip, padded beside her, his tail twitching with excitement.
In the center of the garden glowed a pool that had never been there before. Its water shimmered like liquid starlight, and strange lights danced beneath its surface—like lightning trapped in a jar.
"Do you see it, Pip?" Luna whispered.
The cat meowed and dipped one paw into the water. Ripples of gold spread outward, and suddenly, the most delicious scent filled the air—sweet papaya, warm and sun-ripened.
A tiny face appeared in the water. It was a papaya fairy, no bigger than Luna's thumb, with wings like butterfly wings and a crown made of papaya seeds.
"Welcome, Luna," the fairy chimed. "Our pool is magic tonight. Only the brave dare go swimming in the Moon Pool when the star-lightning dances. Are you brave?"
Luna looked at Pip. The cat was already paddling in the shallow end, purring louder than a thunderstorm.
"I'm brave," Luna said, stepping into the water.
It wasn't like swimming in ordinary water. This was like swimming through a rainbow! The lightning beneath the surface wasn't scary—it was beautiful, crackling softly like gentle fireworks. Pip swam circles around her, chasing the lights.
The papaya fairy offered Luna a glowing piece of fruit. "For courage," she said.
When Luna tasted it, she felt wonderful—warm and happy and brave all at once. She and Pip swam until dawn, playing with the lightning fairies and sharing papaya with new friends.
As the sun rose, the pool began to fade. "Come back next full moon," the papaya fairy called.
Luna carried Pip back to bed, both of them smelling of papaya and magic. Some adventures are worth staying awake for.
