The Papaya Incident

padelpapayaspy

Maya's life had three layers: the version her parents saw (good student, responsible daughter), the version her friends saw (chiill, down for anything), and the version nobody saw — the girl who'd been lowkey spying on Kai's Instagram stories at 2 AM for three months straight.

"You coming to **padel** today?" Zara asked, snapping her gum in the cafeteria line. "Tyler's crew is gonna be there."

Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like someone was squeezing it. "Maybe. Got chem homework."

"Lame. Tyler thinks you're cute, by the way."

Maya practically choked on her own spit. Tyler. Kai's best friend. The guy who'd accidentally left her on read for forty-seven minutes last month when she'd finally DMed him first.

That afternoon, Maya found herself at the rec center, gripping a **padel** racquet like her life depended on it. The court was smaller than a tennis court, the walls were glass, and her anxiety was at DEFCON 1.

Kai was there. Of course he was. wearing that black hoodie with the paint stains on the sleeve.

"You play?" he asked, and Maya's brain short-circuited.

"Uh, depends on who's asking."

Smooth. Very smooth. She wanted to disappear into the floor.

After the game — which Maya lost spectacularly — everyone headed to the smoothie place nearby. That's when IT happened.

"Want some of my smoothie?" Kai offered, sliding a cup toward her. "It's **papaya** and mango. My mom's recipe."

Maya took a sip without thinking. Sweet, tropical, slightly peppery — not at all what she expected. And then Kai's eyes went wide.

"Wait, you like papaya?" He sounded genuinely shocked. "Everyone says it tastes like feet."

Maya laughed. For real, not her fake polite laugh. "It's distinct. But I don't hate it."

"You're different, Maya." Kai's phone buzzed on the table — another Insta notification, another story from someone else. But he didn't check it. "I like that."

Maybe she didn't need to be a spy anymore. Maybe — just maybe — she could just be Maya, the girl who kind of liked papaya and kind of didn't suck at padel and definitely, absolutely had a crush on the boy with paint stains on his hoodie.

Some secrets were worth keeping. And some were worth letting go of.
