The Papaya Incident
Maya's summer was supposed to be legendary. Instead, she was stuck at her cousin's quinceañera practice, standing in the kitchen while Tía Luisa handed her a papaya like it was a bomb.
"Mija, you have to learn to make the fruit salad. It's tradition."
Maya stared at the weirdly-shaped fruit like it was an alien artifact. She was fifteen, not five. Why did she need to learn fruit salad? The answer hit her when Ryan walked through the back door. Ryan, with his perfectly messy curls and that smile that made Maya's brain short-circuit. Ryan, who was apparently her cousin's new boyfriend.
She immediately went into full fox mode. You know what I mean—that thing where you pretend to be totally chill and mysterious, but you're actually lowkey panicking inside? Yeah, that.
"Hey Maya," Ryan said, leaning against the counter. "What's with the papaya?"
"Just...cultivating my culinary skills," she said, trying to sound sophisticated but probably just sounding weird.
Her dog, Buster, chose that exact moment to sprint into the kitchen, barking at absolutely nothing. Because of course. Because the universe hated her.
Buster's tail knocked a bowl of marinated chicken onto the floor. Everyone froze. Tía Luisa gasped. Maya's soul left her body.
But then Ryan laughed. Not mean laughing—like, actually laughing. "Dude, your dog is a total legend."
He dropped to his knees and started helping her clean up, and suddenly Maya wasn't worrying about being smooth anymore. They ended up sitting on the kitchen floor, feeding Buster pieces of papaya (which, it turned out, dogs actually loved), while Ryan told her about how he'd once burned an entire toaster oven trying to make bagels.
Maya learned two things that day: one, papaya is actually pretty good, and two, maybe she didn't need to put on a whole performance to be worth hanging out with. Sometimes the best moments happen when you're just sitting on the floor with fruit salad and a chaotic dog, not trying to be cool at all.
She texted her best friend later: "Lowkey had the best day ever and I don't even know why."
The response came immediately: "Bro, I TOLD you being yourself is the whole vibe."
Maya smiled. Maybe this summer would be legendary after all.
