The Papaya Incident

Lena's summer job at the community pool was supposed to be chill—just her, the snack bar, and endless hours of scrolling through her phone while watching kids struggle through their **swimming** lessons. But her mom had other ideas.

"You need to eat more greens," her mom insisted, packing Lena's lunch with a massive container of **spinach** salad every morning. Like, thanks Mom, nothing says 'cool employee' like sitting there aggressively munching on raw leaves while everyone else chugs Gatorade.

The third week in, Jason from the varsity swim team showed up with his golden retriever, Buster. The **dog** had immediately made friends with everyone except Lena's spinach container, which he'd knocked onto the concrete in his excitement.

"My bad," Jason had said, laughing as he helped her clean up the green mess. His eyes were exactly the same color as the pool water, and Lena's brain had temporarily short-circuited.

Today, though, was different. The pool's WiFi was down again—something about the **cable** line getting cut during construction—and Lena was stuck actually having to interact with humans.

"Try this," Jason said, sliding a slice of fruit across the counter. "It's **papaya**. My grandma's been obsessed with it since she got back from visiting family in Hawaii."

Lena stared at it. "Is that... a thing people eat?"

"Trust me." He winked. "Unless you'd rather go back to your spinach salad."

She took a bite. Sweet, kind of musky, nothing like she expected.

"So?" Jason leaned against the counter, way too close for her brain to function properly.

"It's... not terrible," Lena managed, trying to play it cool even though her heart was doing backflips. "But don't think this means I'm giving up my spinach."

Jason laughed, and something shifted. Maybe it was the papaya, maybe it was the broken WiFi forcing actual conversation, or maybe it was just that Jason had been showing up at her snack bar every day that week.

"Good," he said. "I like a girl who sticks to her guns. Even if her guns are literally just leafy greens."

Lena rolled her eyes, but she was smiling. Some things were still embarrassing—like her mom's packed lunches and the way her hands got sweaty around Jason. But maybe, just maybe, papaya wasn't the only unexpected thing she'd learn to love this summer.
