The Papaya Incident
Maya stood at the edge of the pool clutching her childhood stuffed bear, Clement, behind her back like he was some contraband she'd smuggled into high school. The popular kids were all doing cannonballs and backflips, while she was still hyperventilating about putting her face in the water.
"You gonna stand there all day or actually swim?" called Jake, the swim team captain who'd been giving her mixed signals since homecoming. Maya's palms started sweating, which was ridiculous because she was literally standing next to a pool.
Her phone buzzed in her bag — mom reminding her about the community service hours she needed for college apps. Because that's what sixteen-year-olds needed: more pressure about their future while trying to look cool in a swimsuit that suddenly felt way too small.
Then she saw it. Someone's mom had brought this fancy fruit platter with sliced papaya arranged like it was supposed to be impressive or something. Maya had never even tried papaya. Was that weird? Was she uncultured? Was papaya the new avocado toast and she'd missed the memo?
"You ever had papaya?" Jake appeared beside her, dripping pool water like some希腊 god who'd just decided to grace her with his presence.
Maya almost dropped Clement. "No. Is that... is that basic?"
Jake laughed. And not in the mean way. "Bro, I don't even know what papaya tastes like. Let's find out."
They ate the papaya standing poolside while her stuffed bear watched judgmentally from behind her towel. It tasted like... nothing special, honestly. But Jake was looking at her like she'd just discovered electricity, and suddenly the water didn't seem so terrifying anymore.
"Race you," he said, already running toward the deep end.
Maya hesitated. Then she dropped Clement on her towel and followed him into the water, finally ready to dive in.
