The Papaya Incident
The orange jersey of the Ridgeview Ravens felt like it was actively mocking me. Standing at the concession stand in my polyester uniform, I watched Riley laugh at something Jake-the-perfect-baseball-captain said. Jake with his varsity jacket and his perfect hair and his iPhone 15 Pro Max constantly recording his "epic sports moments" for TikTok.
"You gonna stare all day or actually sell something, Alex?" My coworker Mateo nudged me, grinning. "Bro's been down bad since June."
"Shut up," I muttered, grabbing the container of fruit cups. A customer appeared at the window—a little kid in a Ravens cap.
"One fruit cup, please!" he said, slapping a crumpled five-dollar bill on the counter.
I reached for the cup. Papaya. The worst flavor. Nobody bought papaya. Even the fruit flies avoided it. Which is probably why it had been sitting there since last season's championship game.
Just as I handed it over, the Ravens mascot—a giant brown bear that smelled like someone had doused it in locker room spray—came barreling past, high-fiving fans. His massive paw knocked into my hand.
The papaya cup went flying. In slow motion, I watched it arc through the air and land directly on Jake's pristine white baseball cleats as he walked toward the dugout.
The entire concession stand went dead silent.
Jake stopped. Looked down at the orange mush splattered across his $250 limited edition shoes. Then he looked up, straight at me.
Riley was already laughing. Not like she laughed at Jake's jokes—this was real laughter, doubled over, holding her stomach laughing.
"Dude," Mateo whispered, horrified. "You just yeeted fruit at the captain."
But then Riley jogged over, grinning at me with those ridiculously bright eyes. "That was literally the most entertaining thing that's happened all season. Jake's been needing to be taken down a notch."
My brain short-circuited. "I—sorry about his shoes—"
"Don't be." She pulled her iPhone from her back pocket. "Send me your number. You're sitting with us at the playoff games next weekend."
Behind me, Mateo whispered, "No way. Papaya wingman strikes again."
The bear mascot gave me a thumbs up.
Sometimes the worst moments become the best stories. And sometimes, papaya saves your social life.
