The Papaya Incident

hatzombiefriendpapayaspy

Maya pulled her beanie **hat** down lower, practically disappearing into it. Another house party, another night of feeling like a social **zombie** - just going through the motions, nodding at people she barely knew, checking her phone every thirty seconds to look busy.

"You okay?" asked Jordan, her oldest **friend**, who was actually cool enough to get invited to these things. Maya just shrugged. Jordan didn't get it - Jordan could talk to anyone, start conversations about nothing and make them something.

That's when she saw him: Caleb, leaning against the kitchen counter, holding a slice of **papaya** like it was the most normal thing in the world. Who even ate papaya at a high school party? Maya found herself moving closer, like she was some kind of amateur **spy** on a mission. She pretended to be fascinated by the chip dip, all while watching him out of the corner of her eye.

"It's actually pretty good," he said, and Maya practically jumped. He was talking to her. "Want to try?"

She took the slice, their fingers brushing for a split second that felt like forever. It was sweet and weird and kind of perfect, just like this moment that shouldn't be happening but was.

"I'm Maya," she said, and for the first time all night, she didn't feel like disappearing into her hat.
