The Papaya Incident
Chloe's first week working at GreenLife Market was supposed to be chill. Just scan organic produce, pretend to know what quinoa was, and maybe catch the attention of Jake, the cute assistant manager whose stupidly perfect hair defied gravity.
Instead, she was currently hiding behind a display of artisanal kombucha, watching as her nemesis Brad—that's Brad-with-a-B, captain of the lacrosse team and general pain in her existence—approached her register with a singular, suspicious item.
"Just this," Brad said, slamming a papaya onto the counter like it was a challenge. His friends snickered nearby. Chloe narrowed her eyes. What was this, some kind of weird fruit-based intimidation tactic?
"That'll be seven-forty-nine," she said, keeping her voice flat. Brad's smirk faltered.
"You think you're better than me 'cause you're all vegan and enlightened now?" he shot back. Seriously? This was about her job at a health food store?
"I think you're holding up the line, Brad." She scanned the papaya with aggressive precision.
The situation escalated from there. Brad's friends started chanting something about papayas, Chloe's face was definitely sporting an unflattering shade of crimson, and Jake was watching from the vitamin aisle with that concerned-but-amused expression that made her stomach do illegal gymnastics.
Then someone yelled "FOOD FIGHT!" and Chloe's life became a slow-motion disaster movie.
She was running—literally sprinting—toward the back room when something hit her back. Not a papaya, but something far worse: an exploding vitamin C supplement tablet that someone had apparently decided to use as ammunition. The orange fizz was now dripping down her favorite vintage sweatshirt.
That's when she saw it. The store mascot costume. The giant, deranged-looking fox head with its dead plastic eyes and fake fur that smelled like teen spirit and desperation.
"Oh HELL no," Chloe muttered, but Brad was already advancing with a strategic arsenal of organic tomatoes.
She ducked into the fox costume. It was a bear of a decision—humiliating, hot, and ridiculous—but when Brad lobbed that first tomato, the fox head deflected it like a boss.
"NICE shot, genius!" someone yelled. More laughter, but different this time. Warmer.
She heard Jake's voice over the store intercom: "ATTENTION shoppers, please direct all produce-related aggression toward the exit. The fox is NOT a target."
Chloe peeked through the fox's mouth. Jake was grinning. At her. At the ridiculous, tomato-stained fox.
Later, as they cleaned up organic vegetable shrapnel together, Jake laughed. "You literally foiled his attack. That's legendary." He handed her a papaya. "On the house. Consider it battle pay."
Chloe grinned, wiping orange fizz from her sweatshirt. "I'll take it. But next time, I'm picking the costume."
"Deal." Jake's smile was genuine. "Maybe something less... foxy?"
"No promises."
