The Papaya Incident
Maya felt like a total zombie as she dragged herself through the school hallway, running on exactly three hours of sleep and one questionable energy drink. Being a freshman was exhausting enough without accidentally becoming the school's unofficial spy.
Yesterday in PE, she'd overheard Tyler—the gorgeous junior who somehow made neon green padel shorts look good—talking about "the cable" behind the bleachers. Her brain, still operating on middle-school logic, had immediately assumed he meant something scandalous. Now she was trapped in a web of her own misunderstanding, too embarrassed to ask what cable he'd actually meant.
"Dude, you look dead," her best friend Chloe said, sliding into the cafeteria seat beside her. "Were you spying on Tyler again?"
"Shut up," Maya groaned, resting her head on the table. "I wasn't spying. I was... strategically gathering information."
Chloe snorted, pushing a tray toward her. "Well, spy mission failed. You missed the papaya incident."
Maya lifted her head. "What papaya incident?"
"Someone's grandma sent them with, like, this whole papaya for lunch. Whole. Like, not even cut up. And then Tyler—" Chloe lowered her voice "—tried to be helpful and cut it for them with his padel racket, and it was just... this whole thing."
Maya stared at her. "Tyler has his padel racket in the cafeteria?"
"He's weirdly attached to it. Anyway, the cable he was talking about?" Chloe grinned. "It was literally just a loose cable behind the bleachers from when the AV club set up for the fall assembly. He was worried someone would trip."
Maya felt her face burn. "So I've been obsessing over... safety concerns?"
"Pretty much." Chloe popped a french fry in her mouth. "But hey, at least you're not the person who brought an entire papaya to school."
Maya laughed, the tension in her chest finally loosening. Maybe high school wasn't as mysterious as she'd built it up in her head. Maybe Tyler was just a nice guy who happened to love padel and worry about loose cables. And maybe she needed to stop reading spy novels and start actually talking to people.
"Next time," Maya said, finally eating her lunch, "I'll just ask him directly. No more spy stuff."
"Good plan," Chloe said. "But maybe avoid the papaya. That was a disaster."
