The Papaya Incident

Maya's life was officially over. She could feel the heat radiating from her face as she stared at the cafeteria floor, where her lunch – a perfectly sliced papaya she'd brought to impress the new girl, Chloe – now lay in a tragic collision with the mystery meat surprise.

"No way," whispered Jordan, pointing. "Is that... papaya?"

Maya grabbed her tray and fled. The bathroom stall became her sanctuary. She pulled out her phone and stared at the photo of her prize-winning **goldfish**, Neptune, back home. At least Neptune didn't judge her fruit choices.

This was supposed to be her year. Eighth grade was supposed to be different. She was supposed to be confident, like Chloe, who walked through the hallways like she owned them. Instead, Maya was still the girl who brought exotic fruit to school and somehow managed to create a food incident that would live in infamy.

The bathroom door creaked open. Maya held her breath.

"Hey?" It was Chloe's voice. "You okay?"

Maya considered pretending she wasn't there. But then she thought about Neptune swimming alone in his bowl, and how she'd promised herself she'd stop hiding.

"Fine," she squeaked. "Just... mortified."

"Because of the papaya?" Chloe laughed, but not meanly. "That's actually kind of iconic. My ex tried to be cool by bringing **spinach** smoothies to school last year, and he spilled one all over his white jeans during presentation day. Green stains everywhere."

Maya unlocked the stall door. Chloe leaned against the sinks, looking unexpectedly normal in her ripped jeans and band tee.

"Really?" Maya asked.

"Swear to god." Chloe pulled out her phone. "I have photos. For blackmail purposes."

They sat on the bathroom floor while Chloe showed her the photos, and Maya shared about Neptune's obsession with following her finger around the bowl. Somehow they ended up talking about everything – how Chloe's **bear** of a history teacher had given them a "choose your own adventure" project about ancient civilizations, and how Chloe had picked the **sphinx** riddles but couldn't figure out how to make them interesting.

"What if the sphinx was asking about modern stuff?" Maya suggested, forgetting her embarrassment. "Like, 'What has stories but no mouth, friends but no heart, and rots your brain but you can't stop scrolling?'"

"TikTok," Chloe said immediately. "That's actually genius."

The bell rang. They walked out together, and Maya realized her hands weren't shaking anymore.

"Want to come over after school?" Chloe asked. "We can work on the sphinx project. My mom makes amazing smoothies. No spinach, I promise."

Maya smiled. "Only if you promise never to mention the papaya again."

"Deal." Chloe grinned. "But I'm keeping the spinach smoothie story for when you get too confident."

"Fair."

Maybe eighth grade wouldn't be so terrible after all.
