The Papaya Incident
Jordan's heart hammered against their ribs like a baseball in a batting cage. Tonight was the night—finally going to hang out with Taylor, the senior who'd actually noticed them in AP Bio. The party at Chloe's house was supposed to be chill. Just a few people, some music, maybe swimming in her insanely huge pool.
Standing by the kitchen island, Jordan clutched their iPhone like a lifeline, scrolling through nothing just to look busy. That's when they spotted it—a bowl of papaya chunks. Exotic. Sophisticated. The kind of thing someone confident would eat without hesitation. Jordan grabbed a piece, trying to channel main character energy.
"You actually like that stuff?" Taylor appeared beside them, grinning. "Chloe's mom went through this tropical phase last summer. We've been trying to get rid of papaya ever since."
Jordan froze. The fruit sat in their mouth—creamy, slightly musky, and now incredibly awkward. They swallowed anyway because what else could they do?
"It's... an acquired taste?" Jordan managed, cheeks burning hotter than summer asphalt.
Taylor laughed, but not in a mean way. "You're hilarious. Come on, everyone's by the water."
The pool area was lit with fairy strings, people splashing and laughing. Jordan felt themselves finally unclenching. This wasn't so bad. They could do this. Then—disaster. A playful shove from someone Jordan didn't even know sent them stumbling toward the pool. Time warped into slow motion as their iPhone slipped from their grip, arcing through the air in what felt like tragic slow motion before plunging straight into the deep end.
"My phone!"
But before Jordan could process this technological tragedy, Taylor was already diving in, surfacing moments later with a dripping iPhone. "Saved it." They shook water from their hair like a golden retriever, grinning. "But seriously, who brings their phone poolside? Rookie mistake."
Later, sitting on the patio edge with towel-dried hair and a phone buried in rice (why did Chloe's mom ACTUALLY have rice ready?), Jordan caught Taylor's eye across the pool. A thumbs-up. A smile that actually reached their eyes.
The papaya had been weird. The phone disaster had been humiliating. But somehow, impossibly, Jordan had never felt more themselves.
