The Papaya Incident

padelspywaterpapaya

Sixteen-year-old Maya smoothed her sleek athleisure dress, hoping the country club crowd wouldn't notice she'd never actually played padel before in her life. The summer between sophomore and junior year was supposed to be her glow-up era—new friends, new experiences, maybe even a first kiss. Instead, she'd spent three weeks fake-laughing at jokes she didn't find funny and pretending she knew what "fetch" meant in 2024.

"You coming?" Chloe, who'd somehow already made besties with the popular girls, called from the padel court. "Or are you gonna lurk?"

"Coming!" Maya grabbed a racket, though she'd barely watched YouTube tutorials. The game started. She missed the ball entirely. Twice. Her face burned hotter than the July sun beating down on the artificial turf.

Then she saw him—Liam, the lifeguard with hair that fell over one eye, watching from the pool deck. Her stomach did that embarrassing flutter thing. What if this was her moment? What if she—

"Mayiaaaa!" someone giggled. Oh no. She'd been totally staring.

Later, floating in the pool with her sunglasses strategically positioned, she spotted Chloe and her new squad whispering behind the cabana. Were they talking about her? Being the new girl at an exclusive summer club was basically an invitation to be the subject of gossip. Maya ducked beneath the water, surfacing near the cabana side to hear better.

She felt like a total spy, though honestly she was just treading water and praying no one noticed she'd been underwater for way too long.

"...she's gonna LOVE it," Chloe was saying. "It's perfect."

Maya's heart sank. They were plotting something. Probably something humiliating. That's what popular girls did, right?

"Wait," said Liam's voice from nearby. Maya froze. "You sure she likes papaya?"

Papaya? What was happening?

"Everyone likes papaya smoothies," another voice said. "Especially when you spike 'em."

SPIKE THEM? Maya surfaced so fast she created a mini splash tsunami. "What are you guys doing?"

The whole group froze. Then they burst out laughing.

"We were trying to plan a surprise party for you," Chloe said, wiping actual tears from her eyes. "Since you mentioned you'd never had one."

Liam held up a blender. "I make a killer papaya smoothie. My mom's recipe."

"You... you weren't talking behind my back?" Maya felt water dripping from her hair, somehow more embarrassed now than before.

"Bro, we were literally trying to be nice," said Chloe, handing her a towel. "Though your spy game needs work. You're the worst secret agent ever."

Maya started laughing too. Maybe this summer wouldn't be about fitting in perfectly. Maybe it would be about finding people who didn't care if she missed the ball sometimes, as long as she could laugh about it afterward.

"So," Liam said, his eyes doing that cute crinkle thing. "You want that smoothie or what?"

Maya grinned. "Only if you teach me how to actually serve in padel later."

"Deal." He passed her a cup. "No spying required."
