The Papaya Incident
Maya's hat became her security blanket sophomore year. A black beanie pulled low = invisibility mode. Perfect for when your hair's doing that weird frizz thing that NO product can tame, and you're convinced everyone's staring.
Then she saw him at lunch. Jay. His perfect curls falling exactly right. How?
That's when the operation began. Maya became a secret spy of the most pathetic variety. She'd strategically position herself near his table, iPhone angled like she was texting but actually documenting his outfit choices. The squad pics she sent to Zoë with captions like "subject wore the green hoodie AGAIN - analysis: comfortable or lazy?" became their favorite lunch ritual.
Friday brought the twist.
Maya's stomach growled embarrassingly loud near the salad bar. She grabbed what looked like cantaloupe, rushed to pay, then discovered at her lucky corner spot: it was papaya. The weird tropical fruit her grandma insisted was nature's candy.
Great. Now she smelled like a fruit stand AND had to eat this alone.
Then Jay sat at her table.
Her hat almost fell off. She yanked it lower.
"That looks bomb," he said, nodding at her papaya.
"It's... acquired taste?"
"My mom's obsessed. Says it's a superfood." He leaned in. "Between us, kinda tastes like soap."
Maya laughed before she could stop herself. The hat slipped back, revealing her curls going every direction.
"Your hair's sick," Jay said. "I've been trying to get mine like that for months."
Wait, what?
"Dude, I literally stalk your hair choices," she said, then immediately wanted to die.
But Jay just grinned. "I see you and your friend with the iPhone analysis. Lowkey flattering."
The bell rang.
"Save me a papaya slice tomorrow?" he asked.
"Only if you tell me your hair secret."
"Deal."
That night, Maya texted Zoë: operation discontinued. Subject upgraded to lunch buddy. Also, papaya's actually not terrible.
