The Papaya Incident
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, slicking back her frizzy hair for the third time. Today was the day—first day of sophomore year at a new school, and her hair had other plans.
"You got this," she whispered, grabbing her iPhone from the counter. The screen lit up with texts from her old crew, already looking fly without her. Principal's office announcements droned through her earbuds as she navigated the hallway, trying not to look like a total lost cause.
Then she saw HER—Kai, sitting on the edge of the fountain outside the cafeteria, doodling in a sketchbook. Maya's heart did that annoying flutter thing it did when she saw someone who actually seemed interesting. Kai looked up, catching Maya staring.
"Nice hair," Kai said, and for a second, Maya panicked. Was that sarcasm? But then Kai grinned, all easy confidence and zero judgment. "Mine's a mess too. The wind out here is relentless."
"Tell me about it," Maya muttered, then something truly disastrous happened. Her backpack swung wide, and somehow—don't ask her how—the papaya she'd packed for lunch launched itself into the air and splashed directly into the fountain behind Kai.
Dead silence.
Then Kai lost it. Like, full-on doubled over, cackling so hard that sketchbook nearly took a swim too. "Did you just assault the fountain with tropical fruit?"
Maya's face burned hot enough to power a small city. "It's... supposed to be good for your skin?"
"Worst friend ever, that papaya," Kai said, wiping actual tears from their eyes. "I'm Kai, by the way. And you just made my entire year."
By lunch, they'd claimed a table by the water feature, bonding over mutual hatred of math and Kai's conspiracy theories about why the school's pizza had never once seen a tomato. Maya's hair still looked like a disaster, but somehow, that didn't seem to matter anymore.
Some days, she learned later, you just have to throw papaya at a fountain and see who laughs. The right people always will.
