The Papaya Incident
The kitchen at Jake's party smelled like papaya and desperation. I leaned against the counter, clutching my iPhone like a lifeline, scrolling through apps I wasn't even reading. This was my first high school party since moving to Seattle, and I was definitely not killing it.
"Hey, you're Maya's friend, right?" This guy appeared—tall, messy hair, wearing a beanie indoors in August. Who does that?
"Yeah. I'm, um, Sam." I smoothed my nonexistent skirt nervously.
"I'm Leo. You want some papaya? My mom insisted I bring 'healthy options'." He gestured to a bowl of suspicious-looking fruit.
I laughed despite myself. "Your mom packed you snacks for a party? That's adorable."
"Shut up," Leo grinned, and something in my chest did a little flip-flop.
We ended up on the back porch,躲避 the bass vibrating through the house. Leo told me about how he'd almost been attacked by a bear on a camping trip (probably exaggerated, but whatever), and I confessed that I still slept with a stuffed penguin. His laugh was genuine—no performative irony, just genuine amusement.
Then someone shoved him from behind. His beanie flew off, revealing something I hadn't expected: a completely bald head.
The room went quiet. Leo's face went nuclear-hot.
"Chemo," someone whispered. "His sister—"
Leo grabbed his hat and bolted outside. Before I could think, I followed.
He sat on the curb, head in his hands. "They don't get it. It's not mine, it's hers. But shaving it... solidarity, I guess."
"That's the most badass thing I've ever heard," I said softly.
He looked up, eyes bright. "Really?"
"Really." I sank down beside him. "My friend back home had leukemia. I wish someone had done that for her."
We talked until the party wound down—about nothing, about everything. Leo walked me to my uber, his beanie back on but somehow different now.
"Hey," he said, "you wanna come over tomorrow? My mom's making papaya smoothies. Again."
"I'd love that," I said, and meant it.
Sometimes the best moments aren't the ones you plan for. They're the ones where you almost get attacked by a bear (kind of), eat questionable fruit, and meet someone who shaves their head out of love. Real life is weird that way.
