The Papaya Incident
My palms were sweating so bad I could barely grip my phone. This is what happens when your best friend Maya dares you to "accidentally" bump into your crush in the cafeteria.
"You're literally vibrating," she whisper-yelled, shoving me toward the lunch line. "Go be smooth like a fox, not a trembling chihuahua."
I adjusted my backwards baseball hat—classic cool guy move, except I forgot I had bedhead underneath. The line moved forward and suddenly I was face-to-face with Tyler, who was reaching for the last papaya cup.
"Oh, you want this?" I choked out, grabbing it first like a total weirdo.
"Yeah," Tyler said, raising an eyebrow. "That's literally my favorite."
My brain short-circuited. Instead of handing it over like a normal human, I said, "I can palm-read. Wanna know your future?"
Maya nearly choked on her pizza behind us.
"What?" Tyler asked, looking equal parts confused and amused.
"I mean, I'm kinda a spy," I continued digging my grave deeper. "I noticed you always get papaya on Tuesdays. That's dedication."
Tyler laughed, and I felt my face burning hotter than a thousand suns. "You've been spying on my lunch habits? That's either cute or concerning."
"Cute," I squeaked. "Definitely cute."
"Here's the deal," Tyler said, stepping closer. "You give me the papaya, and I let you sit with me. You can tell me more about your spy skills."
I slid the cup across the counter like it was radioactive. "Deal."
As we walked to his table, Maya gave me a thumbs-up behind Tyler's back. My palms were still sweating, my hat was definitely crooked, and I'd just humiliated myself in front of the whole cafeteria.
But Tyler smiled at me like I wasn't a complete disaster.
Sometimes the most awkward moments become the best stories. And sometimes, just sometimes, being a nervous spy with sweaty palms and questionable papaya-related decisions works out okay.
