The Papaya Incident

The social pyramid at Northwood High was as real as the vitamin gummies Chloe's mom swore would cure her acne. I stood somewhere in the middle—visible enough to get invited to parties, invisible enough to never be the one everyone was talking about.

Until the papaya incident.

It started when Tyler, the human equivalent of a Red Bull energy drink, decided we should all try "exotic fruits" for his TikTok. Being somewhere between a crush and a total idiot, I agreed to let him film me eating papaya for the first time.

"Bro, it's basically nature's candy," Tyler insisted, camera rolling as I sat at his lunch table, surrounded by his jock friends who looked like they'd never eaten anything that didn't come from a drive-thru.

I took a bite. It tasted like wet soap wrapped in a melancholy.

"It's... interesting?" I managed, while Tyler's friends tried not to laugh. The papaya sat in my stomach like a tiny, judgmental papaya-shaped rock.

Later that day, Chloe found me in the bathroom, hiding from my own mortification. "Saw your video," she said, checking her reflection. "Tyler's full of bull, by the way. He bet Jason ten bucks you'd either cry or throw up."

Something in me cracked. Maybe it was the papaya. Maybe it was realizing I'd been climbing the wrong pyramid—trying to impress people who saw me as content instead of, you know, a human being.

I walked back to the cafeteria, found Tyler surrounded by his friends, and said loudly enough for his whole table to hear: "That papaya tasted like regret and your Snapchat filter makes you look like a different species."

The table went silent. Then Chloe started laughing. Not mean laughing—real laughing. Others joined. Even Tyler's friends cracked up.

"Touché," Tyler said, actually kind of impressed.

I didn't magically become popular. But I did become real. And sometimes, at fifteen, that's better than sitting at the top of any pyramid.
