The Papaya Incident

The fox appeared at exactly 7:43 PM, like it had somewhere better to be.

Maya was midway through her third papaya margarita (virgin, obviously - her dad was watching from the grill like a hawk) when she noticed it lurking near the edge of Chloe's backyard. A real, actual fox, all russet fur and calculated chaos, staring down the teenagers gathered around the fire pit like we were the intruders.

"Dude, is that a fox?" Tyler asked, his words already sliding together. "Or am I more wrecked than I think?"

"That's a fox," said Sophie, who'd been quietly nursing a soda and judging everyone's life choices from her lawn chair. "My neighbor has them in his yard. They're basically oversized cats with better PR."

The fox trotted closer, mesmerizing and bold. Someone held out their phone like a peace offering, but the fox wasn't interested in our digital fealty. Instead, it made a beeline for the paper plate where Noah - Noah, who'd barely said three words to Maya all summer - had abandoned half a papaya when he'd gone to grab more water from the cooler.

Noah returned with his plastic cup, eyes widening as the fox daintily snatched his fruit. "Hey, that was... actually, you know what? He can have it."

"You gave it up just like that?" Tyler asked, impressed. "Smooth, bro. Real smooth."

The fox finished its prize and regarded them with what looked suspiciously like amusement. Then it vanished into the darkness, leaving behind nothing but the echo of surprising gracefulness.

"That was the coolest thing that's ever happened at one of these things," Sophie admitted.

Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket - unknown number. Unknown: "So I heard you lost your papaya to wildlife. Want me to make it up to you? Breakfast tomorrow? - Noah"

She typed back before she could lose her nerve: "Only if there are no foxes involved."

His response came instantly: "Deal. No foxes. Promise."

The fox, apparently, was an excellent wingman.
