The Papaya Incident
Maya hadn't slept in 48 hours. Finals week had turned her into a certified zombie, shuffling through the hallways with dark circles that looked like she'd gone 12 rounds with a heavyweight boxer. But tonight was different. Tonight was Jordan's party, and if she wanted to sit next to him in bio next semester, she needed to show up and not be completely awkward about it.
The party was already lit when she arrived—lights low, bass thumping, people clustered in the kitchen doing that weird swaying thing teenagers do when they're pretending to have fun. Maya spotted Jordan immediately, leaning against the counter with that easy confidence that made her stomach do somersaults.
"Hey!" he called, gesturing her over. "You gotta try this. My cousin brought it back from Hawai'i."
It was papaya. Maya had never had papaya. She didn't even know what papaya was supposed to taste like, but Jordan was watching her with those ridiculous dark eyes, so she took a bite.
Wrong move.
Her tongue felt weird. Tingly. Numb? Was this normal? Was papaya supposed to make your mouth feel like it was being electrocuted by tiny bolts of lightning? She swallowed, forcing a smile while internally screaming. This was it. This was how she died. Death by exotic fruit while her crush watched.
"You good?" Jordan asked, actually looking concerned for once.
"Totally," Maya choked out. "Just... intense flavor profile."
Then, through the sliding glass doors, a fox appeared.
An actual fox. Orange-red and magnificent, standing on Jordan's patio like it owned the place. The party went silent. Someone screamed. The fox just stared at them, judgment in those golden eyes, like it couldn't believe these were the humans dominating the planet.
Then it bolted—straight toward the papaya bowl on the counter, snatched a piece, and vanished into the night like a furry ninja.
"Did that fox just—" Jordan started.
"Steal your papaya?" Maya finished, suddenly able to breathe again. The allergic reaction had been pure anxiety. She started laughing, and Jordan joined in, and suddenly the weird tension was gone.
"Best party ever," he said, grinning at her like she'd personally arranged the wildlife encounter. "You're staying for the rest of this, right?"
Maya nodded, exhaustion forgotten. Being a zombie could wait. She had papaya-stealing foxes and a cute boy to discuss them with.
