The Papaya Incident
Summer before sophomore year, and I'm already dying inside. Jordan's pool party — the social event of the season — and I'm standing by the snack table like a loser while everyone else is in the water.
"You playing padel?" Jordan appears behind me, dripping wet, chlorinated perfection.
"Padel?" My voice squeaks. "Yeah, totally. I love padel."
I have never played padel in my life.
"Awesome. We need a fourth. My court, five minutes."
He walks away and I'm already regretting everything. The padel court sits in his backyard like a stage where I'm about to humiliate myself. I grab a slice of papaya from the fruit tray, thinking maybe it'll help. Maybe potassium or something.
Big mistake.
First rally: Jordan serves like he's training for the Olympics. I swing, miss completely, and my racquet flies out of my hand, landing in a bush. Everyone laughs. Not mean laughter, but still.
"You good, bro?" his friend calls.
"Yeah, just... running on empty today. Haven't eaten."
My stomach chooses that moment to make itself known. A loud, violent rumble echoes across the court.
The papaya. The papaya was a terrible idea.
I spend the next twenty minutes in Jordan's bathroom while my body stages a violent revolt against the fruit. When I finally emerge, pale and shaky, the party's still going. Jordan's by the pool again, laughing with his friends.
But then he sees me. Waves me over.
"Yo, you okay?" He actually looks concerned.
"Papaya," I say. "Don't ask."
He cracks up. "Dude, last month I threw up mango all over Ms. Henderson's lawn during cross country. Running while digesting fruit? Never again."
We sit by the pool while he tells me the whole story, and somehow, somehow, this becomes the best moment of my summer.
Sometimes your most embarrassing moments are exactly what make you real.
