The Papaya Incident

hairpapayapadelhat

Fourteen-year-old Leo stared at his reflection, terror pulsing through his veins. The DIY bleach job had turned his hair into a brassy orange disaster—like a traffic cone exploded on his head. His mom's solution: "Just wear the hat until it grows out."

The hat. A neon-green monstrosity his aunt had bought him in Florida. Great.

Monday at school, Leo kept his head down, hat jammed low. But third period, destiny struck in the form of Chloe, the girl who'd been his crush since seventh grade, sliding into the seat beside him.

"Hey Leo! My cousin's having a padel tournament Saturday. You should come—it's so fun, and super chill." Her smile was sunshine. "Promise you'll be there?"

"Yeah," Leo heard himself say. "Totally."

**What had he just agreed to?** He'd never played padel in his life.

Saturday arrived like a nightmare. Leo positioned the hat on his head like it was superglued. The tournament was at Chloe's cousin's mansion, where rich kids hung out by a pool that probably cost more than his entire apartment building.

"Leo! You made it!" Chloe bounded over, adorable in a floral tennis dress. "You want some fruit? My mom went to this specialty market."

She handed him a plate of cubed papaya.

"Thanks," Leo said, popping a piece into his mouth. He'd never had papaya before. It tasted like... melon but weirder. Sweeter. Almost musky.

Five minutes later, his throat started itching. Then his tongue felt swollen. His face flushed hot.

**Oh no. OH NO.**

He was allergic. He'd never been allergic to anything in his life, and he was allergic at CHLOE'S HOUSE.

"Leo? You okay?" Chloe's cousin appeared, paddle racket in hand. "Time to—"

Leo's hat slid off as he gagged. Bright orange hair暴露 in all its glory. Silence descended like a bomb drop. Twenty people staring at his traffic-cone head.

Then someone giggled. Then Chloe.

Leo bolted for the bathroom, humiliated forever.

He splashed water on his face, trying to breathe. The door opened. Chloe slipped in.

"I—" Leo started.

"Your hair is iconic," Chloe said. "And the papaya thing? My cousin is SO obsessed with being exotic and fancy, nobody actually likes that stuff. You're basically a hero for calling it out."

She grinned. "Also, padel is way harder than it looks. You're not missing anything."

Leo stared. "Really?"

"Really." She opened the door. "Come on. Let's get you some Benadryl and maybe some normal food."

Leo followed her out, hatless, into the sunshine.
