The Papaya Incident

Maya stared into her bathroom mirror, her newly dyed orange hair practically screaming for attention. Three days before sophomore year, and she'd gone full impulse. Her mom was going to lose it.

"You sure about this?" her best friend Jada had asked over FaceTime. "That's... a lot."

"Exactly," Maya had said. "No more blending in. New year, new me."

Now she was regretting everything. The dinner party at Tyler's house — TYLER'S HOUSE — was in two hours. Tyler, her crush since seventh grade. And she looked radioactive.

She threw on her favorite hoodie and headed out, trying to convince herself that confidence was key. Whatever that meant.

Tyler's house smelled amazing. His mom was going through a tropical phase — papaya everywhere. Papaya salsa, papaya smoothies, even papaya salad. Maya took a tiny cup of the smoothie, praying her hair wasn't glowing under the lights.

"Cool hair," someone said. Maya looked up to see Tyler himself, grinning. "Bold."

She was about to respond when he turned back to his conversation, leaving her with one word hanging in the air. Bold. Was that good? Bad? Tyler language was impossible to decode.

The smoothie was actually good, and Maya took a bigger sip. Then disaster struck.

"Hold on," Tyler said, laughing. "You have..."

Maya's heart sank.

"You have a little piece of spinach," he continued, gesturing to his own teeth. "Right in the front."

THE SPINACH. Her mom's failed experimental dinner had left its mark.

Maya rushed to the bathroom, her orange hair feeling like a beacon of humiliation. When she emerged, Tyler was waiting.

"All good?" he asked, like it was the most normal thing in the world.

"Yeah," Maya managed. "Sorry about that."

"It happens," he said with a shrug. "Hey, want to see my goldfish? They're actually pretty cool."

Maya followed him to his room, where a small tank glowed softly. Two fish — one bright orange, one silver — swam in lazy circles.

"The orange one's Mango," Tyler said. "The other one's Papaya. Because my mom's obsessed."

Maya laughed. It slipped out before she could stop it.

"What?" Tyler smiled. "Funny?"

"No, just..." Maya shook her head. "My hair's orange, I just had papaya everything, and your fish are named Mango and Papaya. It's a lot."

"Fair." Tyler leaned against his desk. "But honestly? Your hair's cool. Different."

Maya felt something shift. The anxiety in her chest loosened.

"Thanks," she said. "I think."

"I mean it." He paused. "Hey, you want to come over tomorrow? My mom's making papaya chicken. It's actually good. I swear."

Maya's heart did a ridiculous little flip. "Yeah. I'd like that."

"Cool." Tyler smiled. "Oh, and Maya?"

"Yeah?"

"Don't worry about the spinach thing. We've all been there."

Maya left Tyler's house twenty minutes later, her orange hair catching the streetlights, feeling something that wasn't quite confidence but was close enough. Maybe bold was okay. Maybe different was exactly right.

Her mom was going to lose it about the hair anyway. Might as well own it.
