The Papaya Incident
Maya's first day at Northwood High felt like walking into a zombie apocalypse, except instead of brains, everyone wanted her social media handles. She'd spent the entire night doom-scrolling, which explained the undead vibes. Her phone buzzed in her pocket—probably her mom checking in for the third time that morning.
Lunch period. The ultimate social minefield. Maya found an empty table and unpacked the Tupperware her mom had packed. The unmistakable sweet scent of papaya wafted up, and suddenly the cafeteria got quieter. Great. Now she was the weird papaya girl in a sea of ham sandwiches and pizza.
"Is that... actual fruit?" A guy slid into the seat across from her. Dark hair, condescending smirk, definitely on the varsity something team. "In case you haven't noticed, we're in Ohio, not the tropics."
Before Maya could retort, something orange and furry streaked past the lunch windows. A cat. Not just any cat—her cat, Mango, who'd apparently escaped her house and followed her to school. Because her life wasn't already enough of a disaster.
"That's your cat?" Varsity Guy raised an eyebrow, and for the first time, he looked mildly entertained instead of judgmental.
"That's not my cat," Maya lied, desperately trying to telepathically communicate with Mango through the glass. The cat sat down and started grooming itself like it owned the place.
The bell rang, and chaos erupted. Mango was gone by the time Maya reached the exit, but something had shifted. People were whispering about the mystery cat and the papaya girl, and somehow it wasn't terrible. Sometimes the most embarrassing moments were the ones that broke you out of zombie mode and made you actually alive.
At home, Mango was waiting on the porch, acting innocent. Maya scratched behind his ears and thought maybe tomorrow wouldn't be so bad after all.
