The Papaya Incident

Leo's summer was basically cursed before it even started. First, his dad announced they were doing this "healthy lifestyle reset" — goodbye, favorite snacks. Hello, spinach smoothies that tasted like liquid lawn. Second, his crush Maya was posting stories from some party he definitely wasn't invited to. He'd been doing some light social media spying (okay, full-on investigating) trying to figure out why he wasn't on the guest list.

Then came his sister's birthday party disaster.

Jenna had somehow convinced their parents to rent a bear costume for her "forest fairy" themed party. The thing was basically a walking furnace, and their cousin Carlos wouldn't take it off, even while inhaling three slices of cake. Leo was stuck manning the photo booth, watching the popular kids from school pose with faux-enthusiastic smiles.

The cable chose that exact moment to cut out. Of course. Because the universe apparently hated him specifically. Just as Jenna's friends started whining about missing some reality show finale, the house went into full panic mode.

"Leo, fix it!" his mom yelled from the kitchen. "It's your turn to deal with technology!"

He crawled behind the TV, sweating in a way that had nothing to do with the bear costume still parading through the living room. This was it. His moment to be useful. To prove he wasn't just the guy who brought spinach to every friend gathering like some kind of health-conscious idiot.

But the cable box was dead. Completely fried.

Meanwhile, Carlos (still in the bear suit) had decided to test Jenna's fancy papaya carving station. The exotic fruit, which their mom had bought specifically because someone said it was "aesthetic," went flying across the room. It landed perfectly on Leo's head as he emerged from behind the TV, triumphantly holding the disconnected cable wire like it was some kind of prize.

Complete silence. Then Maya — who was somehow standing there, having arrived late with Jenna's best friend — started laughing. Not mean laughing. Actual, genuine, doubled-over laughing.

"Okay, that was legendary," she said, pulling out her phone. "You have to let me document this."

Leo wiped papaya from his forehead while a bear high-fived him in the background. Sometimes the most embarrassing moments ended up being the ones that actually connected people. Maybe this summer wasn't going to be so bad after all.
