The Papaya Incident
Maya's heart did that weird fluttery thing—like, actual cardiac chaos—when Kai's name lit up her iPhone screen. He was inviting her to Jordan's party. The Jordan. Maya, who'd spent freshman year firmly in the social pyramid's basement level, was suddenly being noticed.
"You need snacks," Mom announced, setting a cutting board on the counter. "I got this exotic papaya at the market."
Maya stared at the alien fruit. "Mom, nobody brings papaya to a high school party."
"It's sophisticated!"
Then Barnaby—their ancient, chronically confused goldendoodle—shuffled into the kitchen, nails clicking like broken applause. He immediately flopped onto Maya's feet, sighing dramatically.
"Barnaby, no." She tried to wiggle free. "I have to leave in—"
The papaya rolled off the counter. Time moved in slow motion as it splatted directly onto the floor. Barnaby's eyes widened. Then: CHOMP.
"NO!" Maya shrieked.
Barnaby consumed the entire exotic sophisticated offering in approximately three bites, then looked at Maya with what she swore was pure judgment. Like *this* is the hosting material you're working with?
Her iPhone buzzed. Jordan's group chat was blowing up. Everyone was posting fits—perfect, curated, impossibly cool lives. Maya stood in her kitchen with papaya juice dripping down her leg and a dog who looked smug.
"Just bring chips," Mom sighed.
Maya started laughing. Like, actually couldn't stop. The absurdity. The weirdness. Barnaby licking his chops like he'd just Michelin-starred his meal.
At Jordan's, she walked in—chips in hand, zero exotic fruit—and found Kai in the kitchen, struggling to open a soda can. "Hey," he said. "Glad you came."
"Yeah," Maya said, thinking of Barnaby and his papya victory. "Me too."
Sometimes you just have to embrace the chaos. The social pyramid could wait—Barnaby had taught her that much.
