The Papaya Incident
Maya's curls were basically betraying her. Third day of summer break and her hair had already expanded to approximately three times its normal volume. She stood at the edge of the block party, baseball cap pulled low, trying to will her frizz into submission while everyone else looked effortlessly perfect.
"No way you're hiding under that hat," Priya said, appearing like she'd teleported from the aesthetic goddess realm. Priya's hair was sleek, controlled, basically a TikTok tutorial come to life. "Lucas is literally over there staring at you."
Maya's stomach did that familiar flip-flop thing that happened whenever Lucas—the cute junior who'd somehow managed to be both varsity baseball captain AND surprisingly decent human being—was mentioned. "He's not staring. He's probably looking for his cat."
"His cat?" Priya raised one perfectly sculpted eyebrow. "You really think Lucas 'Golden Boy' Chen is here searching for his missing pet? Meanwhile, I saw him literally walking toward you with that papaya smoothie from Mrs. Rodriguez's stand."
Before Maya could process this information, her foot somehow found the one uneven spot in the entire driveway. She stumbled, her baseball cap flying off, and suddenly her hair was everywhere—like, everywhere-everywhere. And there was Lucas, smoothie in hand, watching her faceplant in spectacular fashion.
But then he was there, helping her up, not laughing, and his eyes were actually genuinely concerned, not mocking. "You okay?"
"My hair," Maya groaned, attempting to gather three pounds of curls into something resembling a hairstyle. "It has a mind of its own. Like, literally its own ecosystem."
Lucas handed her the papaya smoothie. "It looks cool. Like, actually cool. Not the fake 'your hair looks nice' cool, but the 'whoa, how does your hair do that' cool."
Maya's face burned. This was it. The moment her awkwardness reached peak levels.
"I mean, my cat Messy would be jealous," Lucas continued, and then—actual real smile, not the practiced one he used for yearbook photos. "Seriously. I've been trying to get the courage to talk to you all week, and you just made it way easier by almost eating pavement."
Maya blinked. "Wait, you've been trying to—"
"Talk to you?" Lucas shrugged, suddenly looking less like a baseball god and more like an actual nervous human being. "Yeah. Your hair caught my attention during finals week, and I've been sort of obsessively thinking about it since then. In a non-creepy way, I hope."
Priya appeared behind Lucas, mouthing "I TOLD YOU" with exaggerated enthusiasm.
Maya took a sip of the papaya smoothie. It was actually perfect. "Well," she said, deciding to embrace the chaos, "if you're gonna fall for someone, might as well make it memorable."
Lucas laughed, and it wasn't perfect or practiced or anything like his smile in the yearbook. It was genuine and slightly dorky and absolutely the best sound Maya had heard all summer.
"Teach me how to get my hair to do that?" he asked, and Maya's answering smile felt real, felt like summer, felt like the beginning of something.
