The Papaya Incident

Marcus stared at the lunch table like it was a battlefield, which honestly, it kind of was. The cafeteria at Northwood High ran on social laws more rigid than the dress code, and today, Marcus was about to break every single one of them.

"Bro, you're actually eating that?" JT raised an eyebrow, gesturing at Marcus's tray with the skepticism of someone who'd seen too many lunchroom disasters.

"It's a papaya," Marcus said, trying to sound more confident than he felt. "It's exotic. Sophisticated."

"It looks like an alien organ that didn't make the cut," Maya pointed out from across the table, not looking up from her phone.

Marcus sighed. The papaya had seemed like such a good idea that morning—his mom's attempt to expand his palate beyond orange chicken and pepperoni pizza. She'd said something about vitamins and growing boys, but the real motivation had been his cousin's wedding that weekend. The same wedding where Sarah, the girl he'd been low-key crushing on since seventh grade health class, would definitely be present and judging his entire existence.

He needed to expand his horizons. Become interesting. Someone who ate papayas without flinching.

"Whatever," Marcus muttered, slicing into the papaya with increasingly desperate precision. "It's got vitamin C. It's basically a superfood."

"You know what's also got vitamins?" JT leaned in. "Literally anything else that doesn't look like it came from a grocery store in another dimension."

Before Marcus could defend his nutritional choices, the cafeteria doors swung open with the kind of dramatic timing that only happens in movies or terrible real-life moments. Tyler walked in—actual Tyler, varsity quarterback, homecoming king, the guy whose Instagram stories basically counted as social currency—and headed straight for their table.

The table went silent. Maya actually put down her phone.

"Y'all still talking about that papaya?" Tyler asked, sliding into the empty seat next to Marcus like he owned it. Which, socially speaking, he kind of did. "My dad's obsessed with that stuff. Says it helps with recovery after practice."

Marcus's brain short-circuited. The papaya? Not weird? Actually cool?

"Yeah," Marcus managed, trying to play it cool. "It's basically my new thing."

"Nice." Tyler nodded, then lowered his voice. "Hey, by the way, you coming to Jordan's party Friday? Everyone's gonna be there."

And just like that, the papaya wasn't embarrassing anymore. It was a conversation starter. A bridge between social universes.

"I'm there," Marcus said, feeling a grin spreading across his face.

"Awesome." Tyler stood up. "Oh, and nice papaya, man. That's some serious bull confidence."
