The Papaya Incident

Maya's palms were sweating as she clutched the HDMI cable like a lifeline. Sixteen and still terrified of house parties, she'd volunteered to help set up the AV system just to avoid standing alone by the punch bowl.

"You good with that, or you want me to—"

"I got it," she lied to the cute sophomore with the skateboard boots. Her voice cracked mid-sentence. Perfect.

The party was already at that chaotic stage where someone's parents were supposedly "out of town" and the basement smelled like cheap body spray and desperate hormones. Maya wriggled behind the TV, fingers fumbling with the cable connection, until she heard it—snuffing sounds near her ear.

A golden retriever stared at her from behind the couch, eyes wide and judgmental. It was scooting closer, weirdly fixated on something.

"Oh hey buddy," Maya whispered. "You trapped back here too?"

The dog nosed toward the coffee table, where someone had abandoned a truly tragic fruit platter. And there it was: a single, lonely papaya half, looking exotic and out of place among the stale chips.

The dog made its move.

"No, no, BAD dog—" Maya lunged, but she was still tangled in cables. The HDMI cable whipped around her ankle like a snake as she toppled forward, knocking the entire fruit platter onto the carpet.

Silence fell over the basement. Music cut. Everyone stared.

Maya lay there, papaya juice on her cheek, cables wrapped around her like a caught fish, while the retriever happily licked mushy fruit off her dad's old converse.

The skateboard-boot guy started laughing. Not mean laughing—like, actually laughing. And then someone else joined in. Pretty soon the whole basement was losing it, and Maya realized she was too.

"Okay but lowkey," the guy said, helping her up, "that was legendary."

Maya wiped papaya from her chin, heart racing for a completely different reason now. Maybe parties didn't have to be so terrifying after all.
