The Papaya Incident
The hat was my mom's idea. A wide-brimmed straw thing that made me look like I should be gardening, not standing at the country club pool where Chloe Martinez and her clique were holding court. I tugged at the brim, feeling the weight of every gaze on my stupid sun protection.
"Yo, Marcus!" called Jake from the padel court nearby. He was already sweat-drenched, racket in hand. "We need a fourth! You playing?"
I hesitated. Padel wasn't exactly my thing—I was more of a 'stay indoors and read manga' guy. But Chloe was watching.
"Yeah," I heard myself say. "Yeah, I'm playing."
The game was a disaster. I missed every shot, tripped over my own feet, and accidentally served the ball straight into the pool. The splash was spectacular. Everyone stared.
But then I heard it—a laugh. Not mean-spirited. Genuine. I looked up to see Chloe doubled over, not at me, but with me.
"That was literally the most epic fail I've ever seen," she said, walking over. "And I mean that as a compliment."
I stood there dripping wet, hat somehow still on my head. "I was aiming for the water," I lied, straight-faced. "Obviously."
She grinned. "You're hilarious. Hey, want some papaya? My mom went overboard at the farmers market again."
We sat by the pool, eating fruit that tasted like summer itself. The hat stayed on, but somehow it didn't feel so stupid anymore. Sometimes the things that make you different are the things that make you memorable.
