The Papaya Incident

Maya pulled her dad's faded fedora **hat** down over her curls, hoping it would somehow make her invisible at Tyler Anderson's pool party. Spoiler: it didn't.

"Nice hat, Maya," Tyler called from his lawn chair. "Going to a jazz club afterward?"

Her friends dissolved into laughter. Maya's face burned hotter than the July sun.

"Whatever," she muttered, scanning the backyard for an escape route. That's when she saw it—THE **papaya**. Someone had brought actual tropical fruit to a suburban pool party. It sat alone on a folding table like a confused exchange student.

**Lightning** cracked across the sky—because obviously the universe wasn't done embarrassing her yet. A storm was rolling in, perfect.

"Everyone out of the **pool**!" Tyler's mom shouted from the back door. "Weather alert!"

Chaos erupted. Teenagers scrambled everywhere, water splashing, towels abandoned. Maya spotted her crush, Jordan, slipping on wet grass. His phone went flying—straight toward the papaya.

SPLAT. The papaya exploded like a fruity grenade, covering Jordan's white sneakers in orange pulp.

Maya acted without thinking. She grabbed her backpack and dumped out the container of **spinach** salad her mom had packed for her "healthy alternative" to party food.

"Here!" She shoved the spinach at Jordan. "It'll help... I don't know, absorb the juice?"

Jordan stared at her, spinach in hand, papaya on his shoes. Then he burst out laughing. Not mean laughing—actual laughing.

"Did you just carry spinach to a pool party?" he asked, wiping papaya off with spinach leaves. "That's lowkey iconic."

The storm opened up. They stood there in the downpour, her dad's hat completely ruined, tropical fruit everywhere, Jordan wearing spinach like salad confetti.

"I'm Maya," she said, feeling suddenly ridiculous in the best way.

"Jordan," he grinned. "Wanna help me clean this up? My mom's gonna freak about the papaya."

They spent the next hour hiding the evidence and gossiping about how Tyler threw the worst parties anyway. Sometimes your most embarrassing moments become your favorite stories—complete with ridiculous headwear and vegetable accessories.
